Texarkana, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Dallas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Texarkana were farmers and their families who migrated from Texas in the mid-19th century. They raised cotton and corn and bought land around what is now downtown Texarkana. The first store opened in 1881 and the first post office was established in 1886. In 1901, two brothers - John Gentry and Willard Pritchard - founded the J&W grocery store on Main Street which became one of the most successful in town. In 1921, they donated $100 to build a new courthouse and library which still stands today on Park Avenue near Third Street. The townspeople built a schoolhouse on Rogers Road in 1928 and named it after Judge Wiley Bogan (1871-1958). A fire destroyed most of the town center on December 15, 1951; however, local citizens quickly rebuilt with help from donations from friends and family. In 1957, Texarkana experienced its biggest growth period when residents responded to an advertising campaign by Coca-Cola Company that called for "a community that customers could come home to". With renovation assistance from then-Mayor Homer Ladd (D), construction began on an enlargement of city hall which was completed in 1962. That same year saw the opening of Texarkana's only restaurant: The Ark Encounter Shopping Center location adjacent to City Hall served as both business headquarters for Texarkana until 1995 when it relocated into its current building at Fourth Street & Ark Drive
