Texarkana, Arkansas is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Arkansas. The population was 2,281 at the 2010 census. Texarkana is part of the Hot Springs–Summit County, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by cattlemen from Texas and Oklahoma who had come to trade goods with the local settlers. In 1902, Texarkana became an incorporated municipality. The first post office in Texarkana was established in 1881; it served as the only outpost until 1903 when a second office opened. In 1907, Texarkana joined the United States Postal Service and became one of its ten mail towns. It has been known as "the Gateway to the Ozarks" because of its location on U.S. Route 30 between Little Rock and Arkadelphia-Westphalia counties. In addition to its role as a center for commerce and culture, Texarkana also played an important role during World War I as a military depot and airfield. In 1917, construction began on what would become Fort Worth Army Air Base; Texarkana served as its main base until it closed in 1946 due to budget cuts. Texarkana, Arkansas is a small town in east-central Arkansas. The community was founded by white settler James H. White in 1881 and named for the Texarkana River. The town's current name comes from the fact that it is located on theArkansas River, which formed its eastern border at this point. It was originally part of Pulaski County, but it seceded from that county in 1907. The first settlers to Texasarkana were James H. White and his family who arrived in 1881. For many years, Texarkana served as a stop on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves escaping to freedom in Kentucky or Tennessee. In 1902, Texarkana had a population of fifty-six people and consisted of three stores, one blacksmith shop, two churches and one school. By 1916, the population had grown to 1,800 people and included four stores, thirteen churches and fifteen schools. In 1907, Texarkana seceded from Pulaski County because they felt that their taxes were too high compared to those of other counties in the county seat area of Little Rock (then known as Arkadelphia). At first there were protests against this decision by local officials – including then-Governor John Pope – but eventually enough people joined forces with Texarkana to successfully petition for secessionism within just a few months. On July 5th of that year, a formal resolution was passed by the Pulaski County Board of Commissioners agenda without debate: "Resolved That this board be authorized to seek admission into any other country if such wish should be expressed by any class or section thereof." The new county became effective August 10th and bore no resemblance to its predecessor: instead of having seven townships divided into thirty-six districts (the same number as present day Pulaski County), it now consisted only of two villages - TexarkANA and Arkadelphia - with no further representation offered beyond these two communities’ own elected officials! Texarkana remained an important stop along the Underground Railroad until after World War II when most fugitives chose either Oklahoma or Canada rather than risk being caught again during wartime America’s “Open Season” for fugitive slaves! After World War II ended however, many former runaway slaves returned home to Texasarkinan while others moved permanently outside Arkansas due to social changes brought about by post-war Reconstructionivism across much of America! Today few residents remain actively involved in history or commerce within their own small town; instead most locals prefer more relaxed lifestyles 365 days per year!
