Texarkana, Arkansas is a city in Faulkner County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 10,405 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Fayetteville–Garland metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1907 by John Witherspoon and his brother-in-law James Hargrave as a cattle town on the banks of theArkansas River. They named it after Texarkana, Texas, where they had been living for several years. The original settlers were some of Witherspoon's relatives from England and Scotland who had come to America to farm land near Dallas. In 1912, Texarkana became one of the first cities in Arkansas to be cotton ginned; this process involved cutting off pieces of cotton from bales and shipping them by rail to Beaumont, Texas for processing and shipment back to Texarkana. In 1916, Texas A&M University opened its new Agricultural College there and began awarding degrees in agriculture and engineering. The city also became home to one of the first radio stations in Arkansas when WDAN (1090 AM) started broadcasting on October 3rd 1927 from a small building on Main Street that still stands today. During World War II Texarkana hosted more than 100 servicemen from various countries who worked at local munitions plants or served in military related posts such as the First Air Force Base which was established nearby during World War II at what is now known as Dowell AFB across Interstate 40 from Texarkana proper
