The town was named for General James Fenton Webb who led Confederate forces during the American Civil War and died at Texarkana on October 6, 1865 aged 53 years old. During World War II, Texarkana played an important role as both a military base and production center for munitions production by several local companies including RCA (the Ricoh company), Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) and AEC (the American Electric Company). In 1954 it became home to one of America's first television networks when KBBS-TV began broadcasting from Cox Communications' studios there that year. In recent years much industry has moved out ofTexarkana as technology advances such as service sectors such as transportation and computing have taken off elsewhere in Arkansas; however some heavy industry still remains including shipbuilding and oil refining. In 2004 Pew Charitable Trusts released "Arkansas: A Profile", which listed Texarkana among other places around the state with economic revitalization efforts underway since the late 1990s through public dollars - most notably Measure 3A mill improvement district created to spur job growth near Arkadelphia Naval Air Station - although progress has stalled or slowed overall since that time due to budget constraints within government agencies statewide similar to those faced by many small towns across America during this period also known collectively as "economic development orthodoxy." Today much remains unchanged from when little more than dirt roads connected farmhouses along with shops and churches dotting Main Street back then while some storefront businesses opened up over time like Beasley's Hardware & Loan before being replaced by new buildings like Walmart when it opened up next door in 2006 becoming one of only two supercenters open day & night north of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport outside downtown Dallas!
