During World War II,Texarkana played an important role as one of four primary airfields for the United States Air Force’s First Tactical Air Command (Ft Worth AAF). From 1942 until 1945,the city hosted more than 1 million military personnel who used its agricultural land for aircraft storage and airfield purposes; many local businesses also benefited from this wartime production activity. After hostilities ended, Texarkana experienced extensive growth as a bedroom community for Little Rock with its high concentration of corporate headquarters and other major employers; however, recent declines in employment have resulted in some loss of character among many factors associated with these larger metropolitan areas – although retail business has continued to grow vigorously throughout much of downtown area).
