In 1836, a group of Texans led by Captain James Fenton established a post on the bank of the Arkansas River. Fenton named his community Texarkana after the town in Texas where he had been born. Texarkana grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s as cotton became an important crop in Arkansas. This growth led to increased competition for land and labor, and tension between African Americans and whites began to develop. In 1855, Confederate forces attacked Texarkana, resulting in a short-lived siege that destroyed many buildings and killed several people. The city was founded by European Americans in 1881 as a result of the Santa Fe Railway's construction of a line from Fort Smith to Texarkana. The first post office in Texarkana was established in 1882. The town grew rapidly and by 1907 had reached its current size. During World War II, Texarkana played an important role in the war effort due to its strategic location on the Arkansas River and its access to oil resources. In 1945, it became the capital of Pulaski County after being moved from Fort Smith. In recent years, Texarkana has experienced growth as a cultural center and business district for eastern Arkansas. Its attractions include various museums and theaters as well as restaurants and nightlife businesses such as The Ritz-Carlton hotel and casino.
