In 1951, Texarkana had its first tornado outbreak when three tornadoes touched down within 24 hours of each other causing widespread damage across much of central Arkansas includingTexarkana. All three touchdowns caused $100,000 in damage total with only one home destroyed outright; that house still stands today! In 1974, Texarkana played host to one of NASCAR's most famous races when Winston Cup Champion Richard Petty raced his Ford Falcon against world champion Jackie Stewart at Lowe's Park Race Course. During World War II, Texarkana served as one of five military airfields used by United States Eighth Air Force Ninth Air Force bombers; these planes bombed German targets throughout southern France and northwestern Europe during 1944-1945. In 1957, when Arkadelphia Municipal Airport opened just south of town limits near Arkadelphia Lake according to local legend (the airport had been built primarily for cattle grazing purposes), Texarkana's role as county seat decreased somewhat although it continued to be used for government functions such as court hearings and
