The town's history dates back to 1872 when General John C. Brown and his forces moved from Fort Smith to establish a new frontier outpost on what is now Springdale Township. The first settler in Springdale was Jno. Averett who purchased land east of the Arkansas River from Abram Funkhouser and named it after himself,Springdale being one of the few words he ever used in his deed. In 1886, Hiram Stowell acquired 640 acres (250 ha) southeast of present day Springdale along Beaver Creek and called it "Springdale". In 1892, James Hargrave bought 400 acres (200 ha) north-west of present day Springdale and renamed it "Hargrave". By 1907, all three settlements were consolidated into one under the name "Springdale". The original post office operated from 1865 to 1868; its first director wasLevin Gentry. A store built by Genl John Brown on Government Street in 1870 became known as "The General Store" until 1903 when it was taken over by Pemberton Drugs which moved out two years later and changed its name to Pemberton Drug Company Limited until 1949 when it became Monsanto Co.. In 1898 local resident Wm Ewart White founded White Bros Bakery which still operates today with 10 stores across Arkansas, Missouri and Texas according to their website http://www.whitebrosesbakeryonline.com/.
