Springdale is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington metropolitan area. The first people to live in Springdale were Choctaws who hunted game and collected plants and shells along the banks of the Arkansas River. They erected their homes on high ground overlooking the river. In 1836, William Greenfield founded Greenfield colony near present-day Springdale. He named his settlement for himself and his son William Greenfield II, who had accompanied him on his expedition into Texas in 1835. In 1865, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near what is now Springdale while exploring northwest Arkansas for mineral rights in what is now Oklahoma City; he called this location "Golf Course Hill". As a result of this discovery, much wealth was brought to Springdale from various sources over many years; some local businesses still thrive today because of it. In 1886, Hosea Moulton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present-day Springdale from Fayetteville Increase Phelps for $1,000 cash and 30 cents per acre in woodlands that would be used as grazing land for cows and horses until phosphate was available to grow crops thereabouts on commercially owned land nearby. This property became known as Moulton Park after Hosea Moulton's grandson Cyrus Hoke Moultrie acquired it about 1930 from Averill Harriman as part of a larger estate deal which included other properties including White Sulphur Springs (now Arkadelphia), mile post 9 south (now Pulaski County Courthouse), Slaughterhouse Creek Colony (near present day Mountain Home), Beeville Island Colony (near present day Arkadelphia) In 1895 when developers Waddell & Hardin constructedSpringdale High School on land bought from Jno Pugh by developer Jno Pugh Sr., they also built an office building adjacent to school which has been standing since then. That same year one hundred acres (40 hectares) of Maryvale Rancho were also purchased by developer Waddell & Hardin from Mexican landowners Pedro Guerra and Josefa Martinez Castro Johnson Forney where they laid out streetscape plans that are still visible today beneath street lights at corner Main Street/Arkansas Avenue NE with Flowery Branch Road running just past them parallel to Main Street/Arkansas Avenue NW
