The Springdale Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1903. It is one of the oldest rifle and pistol clubs in Arkansas. The group has followed many changes over the years, including becoming a militia organization, changing its name to the Arkansas Rifle and Pistol Association, then again to theSpringdale Rifle and Pistol Club. Today, it is just another NRA-affiliated group operating out of a small town in central Arkansas.
Springdale, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. It is located on the north side of theArkansas River and had a population of 7,813 as of the 2010 census. The Victory Garden complex and other rural landforms make up much of Springdale's eastern edge. According to the 2010 United States Census, Springdale has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.9 km2), all land. The first permanent settler in what would become Springdale was William King in 1872. He operated a gristmill along creek that flowed through present-day Springdale and built a cabin there on July 4th, 1872. In 1932, Arkansans named their new county after John Fenton US Congressman from Arkansas' 3rd congressional district who was killed during World War II while serving in England; this was due to his service with the US Army Air Forces at RAF Boulogne-sur-Mer where he attained the rank of Colonel before his death in 1942. In 1907, Ira Thomson opened the first store in what would becomeSpringdale when he moved from White City, Oklahoma to open his store at 527 S Broadway (now commercial property across street from Ark Encounter). By 1912 there were 10 stores operating out of Springdale with Thomson owning or operating most of them. Storeowners erected picnic tables for customers to eat lunch outside their businesses which continued until about 1957 when picnicking becameillegal following passage of state law limiting Picnics to "houses or public places within five contiguous blocks". In 1916 local citizens met at Third Presbyterian Church and voted unanimously to name their community after General Joseph E Hinton Battle (1862-1936) who fought both Confederate and Union troops during the American Civil War; Battle also received an award from President Ulysses S Grant for his war efforts including three years as Commanding General Confederate forces south of Memphis Tennessee known as Operation Crossroads which destroyed more than 1 million barrels sterling worth cotton near Tupelo Mississippi). On November 14th 1920 residents organized themselves into two groups: one group wanted To Name Our Community After General J A Cooke while another wanted To Name Our Community After First Lady Alice Pauline Hale (1869-1964) due to Hale having been born nearby on October 15th 1869 just east of Aschervillefarmsteadhouse now occupied by Bethel Baptist Church & School - springside@yahooacidcom springdalepaulinehale
