The name "Springsdale" was given to it by General John C. Pershing for his ranch there. Springdale is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway metropolitan area. The first settler in Springdale was George Fenton who arrived in 1868 from Missouri andKansas City. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street which he named "Fenton's Grove". Later, Wm Harnett built a cabin on what is now Harrell Road. A post office called Springdale was established in 1870, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1879, Jno Matson moved to Springdale and began planting corn and wheat near the present day courthouse square which he named "Matson's Prairie". In 1886, David Ladd purchased land on what is now Second Avenue from Samuel Senter for $1,000 cash plus 10 shares of stock in the Springsville Railroad Company.. In 1887, Ladd erected a two-story frame schoolhouse on his property which served as the community's first schoolhouse until 1928 when an addition were constructed adjacent to that building that became known as the Ladd School House Museum today. This school also housed magistrates court proceedings during its early years before they were transferred to North Conway Municipal Court where they remain today A post office called Springdale was established in 1887, and remained in operation until 1907 In 1902-1903 Gidney Powell bought 1/2 interest (later increased to 3/4 interest)in Springsville Railroad Company from David Ladd for $10 cash plus 100 shares of stock .. Gidney Powell continued running Springsville Railroad Company until 1925 when it merged withArkansas Eastern Railway company to form Arkansas Western Railway Company . At this timespringsville railway company changed its name back toSpringsville Railway Co . Inc . On May 16th 1930 Arkansas Western Railway Co Incorporated changed its name back againtoSpringsville Railway CoInc In 1911-1912 Amos Hargrave bought 1/4interest (later increased to 3/4 interest)in Springsville RailroadCompany from Gidney Powell for $10 cash plus 100 shares of stock .. Amos Hargrave continued running Sprightsville Railroad Company until 1925 when it merged withArkansas Eastern Railway company to form Arkansas Western Railway Company At this time sprightsVILLE railway company changed its name back againtoSprINGSVILLE RAILROAD COMPANY INC
The first residents of Springdale were the Cowpokes, who arrived in 1814. The town was named for General David Springdale, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1865, the town was renamed for Arkansas Senator John A. Rankin.
