The city was founded on a piece of land that used to be part of the larger town of Osborne. In 1916, Springdale became an incorporated city with its own government and mayor. It is part of the Little Rock–Jefferson City, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1887 by J.D. Stephenson and other pioneers as a post office on the railroad between Fort Smith and Arkadelphia. After years of growth, the post office closed in 1916 and was replaced by Springdale Village. In 1924, Springdale Village became an incorporated municipality with a population of 3,500. The town center was enlarged in 1968 when it annexed the neighboring towns of Centerville and White Sands. In 2007, SpringdaleVillage Incorporated filed for bankruptcy reorganization following disagreements about its debts and property sales which had increased since 2006.

The name springs from an early settler's belief that spring would come to them " nearer than any other place," as it was located on high ground near the confluence of two creeks. The first people in Springdale were people who lived along the banks of the White River when it was known as Little Rock Creek. In 1827, A.H. Stephens and his brother James built a cabin on this creek and named itSpringdale after themselves and their home state of Arkansas (now Oklahoma). They were followed by others until about 1840 when most of present-day Pulaski County originated except for Springdale which became part of Hutchinson County in 1853. In 1877, General W F Hargrave founded the Arkansas Military Academy at Springdale which remains one of the State's most popular institutions to this day! This military academy has produced many notable alumni including Ulysses S Grant, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D Roosevelt! 1898-1902: The Arkansas Legislature begins to use the term "Springdale" for the town. 1907-1908: Springdale is incorporated as a city. 1920s-1950s: A large cotton plantation is established in Springdale, and many prominent Arkansans are born or grow up there. 1960s-1970s: Springsdale becomes a major center of education and business in the state.
