It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Springdale is located near the center of Pulaski County and east of North Little Rock. The name "Springdale" first appeared on an official deed from 1827 to James Aitken, who bought land in what is now Springdale from Nicholas Brady. In 1835, Hosea Miller donated land to the Methodist Church in Springdale and it became a parish seat in that year. A post office called Springdale was established in 1849, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1907, local businessmen John Witherspoon and James Rankin purchased 2,080 acres (1 km²) of land east of present-day Springdale from Nicholas Brady for $5,000 cash. They named their new community after John Wesley Hardin (1811-1870), an American politician who served as Senator from Tennessee and as Minister to Russia under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. The townsite was developed by both men into a farming community with a population of about 100 people by 1915. During World War II many people worked for Boeing Aircraft Corporation at its main plant located south of town on White Sands Boulevard just outside North Little Rock; however most residents left after Pearl Harbor because there were no jobs available within range for Arkansans due to wartime production goals set by the US government. After the war many residents returned but most businesses closed down or moved away leaving only one business that continued operations into the early 21st century: Stoneware Emporium which still stands today on Main Street inside Springside Mall before being taken over by JCPenney when that store closed its doors around 2011 followed by Searsphase closure around 2016 demolition completed 2017

In 1921, Springdale became an incorporated village under the name of Arkadelphia. In 1984, Arkadelphia merged with Springdale to form one municipality. In 2002, Springdale lost its status as an incorporated village and adopted its current name of "Springdale". The population increased to 1,020 in 2010 and 1,032 according to the 2016 census estimate
