On January 1, 1871, the first post office in Siloam Springs was established. On December 22, 1881, the town was incorporated. The population of Siloam Springs increased rapidly from its original three hundred residents to over two thousand by 1895. The first store was built in 1902 and a movie theater opened in 1912. In 1933, the Arkansas state penitentiary was located in Siloam Springs and it remains one of the largest correctional institutions in the United States today. In 1962, Interstate I-70 was completed through Siloam Springs and it quickly became an important transportation artery for the community.
