Siloam Springs is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock- campus of the University of Central Arkansas. The community was founded by James Fenton and others in 1889 as a result of an irrigation project to improve land around Siloam Springs creek. The town's first post office was established in 1890. In 1907, Siloam Springs became the county seat for Pulaski County after merging with neighboring Ellisville. At that time, it had a population of 1,500 people and was home to a public school and jail. However, by 1920 the population had grown to 5,000 and the town developed into an agricultural center with several large cotton plantations adjacent to its downtown area. By 1930 siloam SPRINGS had become one of the five largest towns in Pulaski County with over 10 thousand residents within its limits! During World War II, much activity took place in and around Siloam Springs as many war production plants were located there including Ford Motor Company's Willow Run Arsenalplant on White Sands Boulevard just south of town (now known as Interstate 40). Other major businesses located near or within Siloam Spring include American Canning Works (later Pepsi-Cola), Allied Chemical Corporation (later BMW), JBL & Associates (later Sony) and Phelps Dodge Corporation's Carver plant on White Sands Boulevard which produced tanks and other armored vehicles during World War II. After hostilities ended 20 years later in 1945 local factories gradually closed their doors but some still thrived such as Allied Chemical Corporation which announced plans to open a new plant called "Pulaski Valley" east of town along FM 1463 but this never came about due to economic reasons only another name change for what would eventually become known as Monsanto! On October 24, 1871, Siloam Springs was founded by Isaac Newton and his brother John. The town rapidly grew and soon had a population of over 100 people. The first store opened in the town on November 1, 1871. By 1890, Siloam Springs had become an important trade center for the region and its economy was based on agriculture, mercantile activity, and mining. In 1898, Siloam Springs became one of the original twenty towns in Arkansas that were designated as a Urban Development Area (UDA). In 1970, UDA status was eliminated and the town reverted to its rural status. In 1978, following passage of the Tax Reform Act of 1978 (), Siloam Springs became one of the first cities in Arkansas to receive cityhood. On January 1st of that year it officially became a city with a population of over 50,000 people.
