After being closed by JJA in 1949 due to allegations of human experimentation and scientific misconduct, Hitachi moved its operations to Rokkakuji near Tokyo in Japan until its relocation authorization expired in 1957. In recent years, much attention has been given to Siloam Spring's history as a slave trade center and its role within the American Civil War era black market economy. There are several interesting shops located around town which offer insights into this topic; among these are "The Slave Market," "Arkansas History Museum," and "Old Fort." During World War II, Siloam Springs played an important role as the main embarkation point for soldiers coming to fight in Europe. The community also contributed hundreds of workers to the war effort. After the war, Silom Spring experienced significant growth and development due to new economic opportunities associated with the oil industry.
