Over time, African Americans immigrated to Siloam Springs as well; these people worked primarily on farms or construction jobs around town until the late 20th century when they began to get their own homes and businesses. After years of progressivism Mayor Clyde Davenport declared a moratorium on black residential integration in 1978 due to fears that it would lead to violence or economic decline for whites resident in an integrated community. This policy ended when white residents revolted against Davenport's leadership and Integration resumed with much fanfare beginning in 1981 under new Mayor Frank Hynes - one of only two mayors during this period who openly supported integration efforts despite being outvoted by both Democratic Party officials and local business owners opposed thereto." "Today, Siloam Springs remains one of few remaining exclusively Caucasian towns throughout Arkansas without any significant African American populations."

The townsite that sits on the banks of the Arkansas River formed when two ridges of mountains met at an angle. Today, parts of this valley are still visible as low hills called "Hill Country." During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many businesses were established in Siloam Springs. These businesses included a sawmill run by J.B.'s father-in-law John Haines, a grocery store run by Mrs. Laddie Craddock, hotel beds and other supplies for soldiers during World War I (the first major war fought with national significance in America), and a printing press used to produce local newspapers such as The Arkansan and The Siloam Valley Eagle
