In fact, only two remaining gun magicians—Johnnie Hogarth and Bill Cook—continued operations in Siloam Springs through the 1930s. These weapons had a shortened barrel which allowed them to be made much easier to conceal than traditional revolvers. Siloam Springs was founded in 1872 as a small town on the banks of the Arkansas River. The city was named for Siloam Springs, Tennessee, where General John C. Frémont had been born in 1821. By 1907, Siloam Springs had grown to over 100,000 residents and became one of the largest cities in Arkansas. In 1911, the silos at nearby Fort Smith were moved to Siloam Springs to be used as a munitions plant. In 1916, Mayor A.H. Flanagan enacted an arms control law that banned handguns within city limits and required all citizens to have permits to carry handguns. The law also outlawed the sale or manufacture of firearms without a permit. In 1934, Siloam Springs joined with Little Rock as the only municipality in Arkansas to become a state capitalcity under Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program. After World War II ended, Siloam Springs experienced rapid growth as Arkansas' industrial base expanded into new areas such as food processing and plastics production; however, gun control laws remained unchanged until 1949 when they were repealed by governor Orval Faubus after he became president of the United States; this led to increased handgun ownership within city limits and an increase in crime rates throughout Arkadelphia County due to gun-free zones becoming popular tourist destinations for criminals looking for easy targets
Siloam Springs, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,831 at the 2010 census. It lies about 20 miles (33 kilometers) west of Little Rock and 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of Fort Smith. The community was named for a spring in nearby Siloam Springs Park. The first settlers were attracted to the fertile soil and natural springs near Siloam Springs by 1871. By 1901, the town had been founded on a tract of land that included present-day Siloam Springs and parts of what are now Springdale and Rogersville. A post office was established at Siloam Springs in 1903. In 1914, an electric railroad line from Little Rock arrived in Ansonia Junction Station just south of town; this made it possible to carry goods directly to market without having to go through Fort Smith or Wichita Falls. In 1939, during World War II, the United States government built two airfields within 1 mile (1 km) of town: one at Ford Field on the north side of town and another at Willow Run on the south side; these airfields served as training facilities for American forces engaged in World War II. After war ended, both fields were closed down and most use has been confined to military use since then. In 1957, when Pulaski County merged with Benton County, Siloam Springs became part of Benton County; however, it retained its own post office until 1971. As a result of changes in county government which took effect upon integration into the new county system following statehood in Arkansas in 1999 – including the creation of three districts – Siloam Spring lost its official status as a village until 2004 when it regained full village status pursuant to an act passed by the ARS Board Of Commissioners that year.. On July 10th 2006 Mayor Rick Allgood announced plans for development around Lake Powell Riverfront - creating over 100 jobs over 5 years - bringing new life to what had been once again dormant industrial area... Today, much of that progress remains intact, including some of its distinctive architecture and attractions such as its renownedsilica mines or "shells." A rich history begins with our founding fathers. George Washington Carver arrived here less than two months after Texas Independence from Mexico on July 4th, 1871 to found what would become known as Siloam Springs- just across the river from Fort Smith (now Fayetteville). Carver was determined to create a center where he could learn more about agriculture and develop new products for his fledgling state. He named his new settlement after his home state of Tennessee but failed to get support from other settlers so he relocated it again to better situated land near present day Highway 7 south of town limits in 1872- naming it after himself . It wasn't long before businesses began appearing along Main Street serving travelers heading westward towards Little Rock or eastbound towards Fayetteville; these include Butte de la Salle mercantile building opened in 1874 which continues to be popular today as First National Bank & Grill; US Post Office built by John Pemberton at 511 Main Street in 1886;and Southern Pacific Railroad depot at 6th Street/Natchez Avenue opened October 9th 1889 nowserving as Museum Hall & Restaurant
