It is located on the edge of the Ozark Mountains and is adjacent to the city of Little Rock. Sherwood was founded by John Hinton in 1875. The first post office in Sherwood was established in 1876. A school and store were built in 1881, and a community hall followed in 1892. The first telephone service arrived in 1903. In 1907, a sawmill and gristmill were established in Sherwood; these remain operational today. In 1908, the first high school opened in Sherwood; it currently serves as an elementary school. In 1950, a branch of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center was moved to Sherwood from nearby Fort Smith after becoming too expensive to maintain at separate locations within Pulaski County. In addition to its role as NASA's primary space center for many years, Sherwood also served as home to Army Research Laboratory (ARL) during World War II until Little Rock took over that role permanently in 1947. The P&O Canal Company built one of their largest dams near Sherwood during this time period; it now forms part of Ark Encounter National Park which includes much of what once lay within Sherwoods limits including both the original townsite buildings and some new construction undertaken during the park's development phase such as the incorporation of large areas around Lake Powell into its boundaries
