Sherwood is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first self-defense weapons were handguns. Sherwood had two shotguns as well as rifles and pistols until around 1875 when the first shotgun factory was built in the town by John O'Brien and his son, Michael. In 1903, Sheriff A.J. Hargrave bought a machine gun from Colt Firearms Works in Hartford, Connecticut to arm law enforcement officers in Pulaski County. This firearm became known as "The Great White Hope" because of its effectiveness against outlaws and bandits roaming the area during that time period. In 1907, Sherwood's first rifle store opened up with an inventory of over 100 rifles including many Model 1886 Winchester rifles imported from America by J F Donelson & Sons Ltd., based out of London England at that time (the company later changed their name to Remington). In 1916 sheriff E R Sims purchased a machine gun from Colt Firearms Works for use by the sheriff's department which became known as "The Sims Gun". As World War I approachedSherwood began to produce munitions such as artillery shells and TNT for use by the war effort When World War II beganSherwood was one of six Arkansas towns located within miles of Springfield Missouri where American arms manufacturers were producing ammunition for Americans fighting in Europe . On September 2nd 1945 Sheridan blows up an ammunition dump on Federal Road near present day Interstate 40 just outside town limits after informing local military units that this particular dump contained high explosives which could be detonated if found

The present day city of Sherwood was established as a town on February 20, 1904 by an act of the Arkansas General Assembly. It had a population of 154 when it consolidated with neighboring towns on May 7, 1912 to form the new city of Pulaski. On October 5, 1920 Pulaski voters approved an amendment to their charter authorizing the merger with neighboring towns Sherman and Gentry to form the new city of Sherwood-Gentry. At that time there were only two other cities in Arkansas: Fayetteville and Little Rock
