It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Pine Bluff, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sherwood was founded in 1877 by J.H. Stephenson and named for General James Harnett Sherman who fought with Forrest during the Sherman-Aiken War. The first post office in Sherwood was established on December 6, 1877, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 3, 1907. The first store in town opened on October 12, 1880. The first school in town was organized on November 8th of that year and remained open until September 9th of 1890 when it closed due to financial difficulties. Thefirst cotton gin in Sherwood was built by Wm Hargrave and operated from 1886-1887. A second cotton gin followed soon after this one and also operated from 1886-1887; however it ceased operations due to lack of patronage or competition from other local gins]. In 1898 there were only two schools left operating within the township: one for whites only (Sherwoods High School) which had been organized on May 15th that year by Mrs Bueling (later Mrs Stroud), and one for colored students (Rufus Turner Elementary School) which had been organized by Mr Fenton on October 14th . From 1912 to 1916 a small post office called "Winchester" served residents located just east of present day Sherwood off US Highway 63 south of Pine Bluff; however this service was discontinued because Winchester's mailing address changed frequently as mail arrived via stagecoach instead of wagon train travelling between Arkadelphia and Pine Bluff daily.]

The first post office in Sherwood was established on July 12, 1892, and closed on December 12, 1902. Sherwood grew rapidly during World War II because of the production of aluminum cans by the local company American Can Company (ACI). Many African Americans worked at ACI until it shut down in 1954; most of the black workers were given their own jobs at other companies while they awaited trial for discrimination against them. In 1957, Northwest Arkansas Community College opened in Sherwood and soon began to draw students from all over Pulaski County; many of these students came to work at ACI after leaving school. In 1975, Pulaski County Agricultural Extension Service moved into the old Goudreau School building and began offering agricultural education courses there as well. Today Northeast Arkansas Community College also offers agricultural education courses in Sherwood through its extension service
