Sherwood, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Blythe area. Optical equipment dealers and manufacturers have been located in Sherwood since the early 1900s. The first optical equipment dealers in Sherwood were J.C. Penney & Co., which opened its first store on Main Street in 1903. Other early retail stores included Snively's Hardware Store (1909), Wagon Wheel Shoes (1910), and Hecht's Drugstore (1911). In 1927, when Jack Wagon Wheel Shoes closed its doors forgood, it was the last business to open in Sherwood. The first optical equipment manufacturer in Sherwood was Willis Manufacturing Company, which made reference glasses and contact lenses for use with eyeglasses and other corrective devices such as spectacles and wigwams. In 1933, Willis merged with Royalty- Enterprises Corporation to become Royalty-Willis Industries Incorporated; this company continued manufacturing eyeglasses until it ceased operations in 1984. In 1937, Allied-Gold Corporation began production of high-temperature welding torches at their plant on State Highway 122 near present day Fair Oaks Drive; this company would later become Allied Industrial Products Corporation (AIP) and produce electronic components under that name until its acquisition by Intel Corp.. AIP produced various types of optics products including microscopes, telescopes, binoculars, digital camera systems, light bulbs and air conditioners until it ceased operations in 2003. During World War II there was a great demand for optical goods due to the war effort; many companies manufactured items such as contact lenses and goggles for military personnel. One major producer of wartime optics was Bendix Corp.; their products include gas masks and NVGs/binoculars for use during combat missions. After victory over Axis forces came through 1945 however production slowed down as available resources were used elsewhere within the war industry; eventually Bendix went into receivership in 1949 before being purchased by Raytheon Plastics Company Incorporated who continue to produce optics products under that name today..

Located on Arkansas Highway 5 about east of Little Rock, Sherwood had a general store (now gone), two churches (one now abandoned), a school (closed 1975), a water tower/pump station (closed 1977) and a few houses from the turn of the 20th century until after World War II when most residents moved away to new towns or rural areas. Today there are only scattered remains of what were once many homes including one that has been vacant since 1978 when it was condemned as being too dangerous to live in due to lack of fire protection. The remaining structures are all wood frame structures with thatched roofs which give them an appearance similar to those found throughout much of central Arkansas during this time period.
