Sherwood is a small, rural town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,709 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Pulaski County and the 10th-least populous. Sherwood is located on State Highway 7 east of Fayetteville and south of Little Rock. The first settlers to Sherwood were two families from Illinois who came to live on a farmstead in 1872. A post office was established in Sherwood in 1875, and a school was built that year. In 1876, three men from Illinois bought land adjacent to present-day Sherwood and began developing it into a small town with a store, blacksmith shop, livery stable, and two churches. They named their new community after General Ulysses S. Grant which they had seen on an old map of the area. The first mayor of Sherwood was Jethro Pflueger (1876-79). Other early mayors include Otto Weininger (1901-04), Oskar Cook (1907-10), Harry Capps (1911-14), Hiram Hahn (1920-24), John Witherspoon ( 1925-29) and Rollin Hilliard ( 1930). In 1931, Fredrick Ladd became the first African American to be elected as Mayor ofSherwood when he ran against Harry Capps for reelection. In 1936, Clyde Bentley became Sheriff of Pulaski County after serving as Mayor ofPulaski City since 1933; sheriffalty continued until 1975 when it was abolished due to population growth within Pulaski County only; however sheriffs continue to serve as part of county government under state law until now . Sherwood is a small town in Baxter County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Central Arkansas metropolitan area. The first recorded mention of Sherwood was in 1881 when it was called "Henderson". Henderson Township was organized in 1882 and named after Dr. John Henderson, who donated land to the community for a new school. In 1907, the name of the township changed to Baxter and it remained that way until 1955 when it reverted back to Sherwood Township. In 1951, an oil well was drilled in Baxter County and gas wells followed shortly thereafter. The townships along both sides of Highway 80 were afflicted with dust storms which caused great damage to homes and businesses in neighboring communities including Sheridan and White Pine which were located about 25 miles (40 km) away from Sherwood. A local radio station helped promote cleanup efforts by broadcasting reports from the field day by day as they happened. As oil production increased throughout Arkansas during the late 1950s and early 1960s,Sherwood's economy began to grow as well. Manufacturing companies such as Peco Oil & Gas Company became established here and many people moved into this growing town over time. The arrival of Interstate 40 made Sherwood even more accessible than it had been before while also increasing traffic generated by all of the nearby manufacturing jobs that sprang up during this time period: Cars were no longer just seen driving through town but actually being manufactured here! In fact, many streets withinSherwood are still lined with factories from when this area operated at its peak: Factory Street becomes Factory Avenue once you reach Higgins Road; Midway Drive becomes Holcombe Boulevard; Elmira Road becomes Millersville Boulevard; etc.).
