It has been called "The New Jerusalem" since its creation in 1907 as the site of the first Methodist church in Southwestern Arkansas. Sherwood is located at (36.822691, -92.305916). It is northeast of Little Rock and east of Fayetteville. The townsite was laid out on November 3, 1907 by J.P. Kirby and Wm. Prouse as part of a land grant to Andrew Jackson Hardy from the Cherokee Nation for his donation of . Sherwood developed rapidly after it was chosen as the site of the first Methodist church in Southwestern Arkansas on December 15, 1907 by founders Jens Jensen and Hilda Hardesty Smith with assistance from Methodists Abner•Clyde Goodrich and Pilgrim Bynum (the latter two were also early settlers in neighboring Pine Bluff). At first services were held at local barns or other convenient locations but soon enough Sherwood had its own chapel which served both congregation and surrounding area until 1963 when it burned down due to a fire that started in a nearby chicken coop. In 1925, Methodists built their second church on State Road 318 about northeast of Sherwood; this building remains standing today and serves as an museum open to the public on Thursdays from 10am-12pm during regular business hours ( closed some weeks during Lent). In 1941, another Methodistchurch was built just south of town off US Highway 169; this building still stands today and is used for storage purposes only. In 1966-1968 two new churches were constructed near present day Sherwood High School – one within walking distance of downtown while the other sat outside on Wellborn Drive across from Walmart; these buildings remain standing today however Walmart has moved out tenantially within recent years so they are not currently used economically or aesthetically however they remain popular tourist destinations for locals & visitors alike!
