The town of Sherwood was organized in 1881 when the Arkansas General Land Office acquired a tract of land east of the river for a railroad depot. The town grew rapidly, and by 1907 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1912, the town plat was amended to include an all-purpose school and church. A new post office was built in 1915, and in 1920, the name of the town was changed to Sherwoodville after its incorporation into the city of Little Rock. Sherwoodville experienced significant economic development during World War II, with large contributions coming from local businesses such as aircraft manufacturing plants at Lockheed Martin and North American Aviation. The war also helped spur development within Sherwoodville itself, with many new homes being built during the war years. After the war ended, businessactivity decreased throughout most of Sherwoodville until the late 1990s whenakraich began operations at a new plant adjacent to downtown which has supported numerous jobs throughout its history.
