Sherwood is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1871 by John Dorman and his brother-in-law, Hiram Patton. The name "Sherwood" comes from a corrupted version of the word "Shreveport." The first school in Sherwood was built in 1872 and served as both a day care and primary school until 1944. In that year, the town became an all-through high school. In 1962, Sherwood voters passed a referendum to annex adjacent Quitman County into the Town limits - this annexation created the current boundaries for Sherwood. In 2000, Sherwood voters passed a resolution recognizing National Japanese American Day on February 14th as Local National Japanese American History Day. That year also marked the 100th anniversary of Japan's entry into World War II. In 2002, $9 million was invested in new infrastructure including new schools and roads which has turned around what once been an economic decline within little over 10 years due to lack of investment or choice by local officials who saw only short term gain while long term consequences such as pollution were ignored or exacerbated by poor management practices costly mistakes made during previous administrations characterized as "the good old days". These days there are no centers of industry left but rather businesses have migrated to neighboring townships because they offer more affordable property values and better access to transportation than their rural counterparts have ever enjoyed.-Linda Soderquist

Sherwood is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. It is situated on the edge of the Ozark Mountains, about northeast of Little Rock. The population was 1,795 at the 2010 census. The first European to reach Sherwood was Col. John Smith in 1819 with his troops who were sent to Fort Smith by President James K. Polk to secure passage for American traders traveling through western Arkansas. In 1865 area miners discovered rich coal seams near the town and began extracting it beginning in 1866. In 1870 a post office was established at Sherwood; it remained in operation until 1912. In 1886 Republican Congressman Hiram Sisler from neighboring Jonesboro issued a challenge for the election of Governor of Arkansas to be held at Pine Bluff; he won but did not take office because he had been term-limited as a Ulysses S. Grant appointee under law then existing in Arkansas (the Eleventh Amendment granted voting rights to citizens regardless of gender). In 1907 Iron Mountain Railroad constructed a branch line into Sherwood from its main line east of Little Rock; this brought increased traffic and development to the town which reached an all-time high during World War I due to shortages caused by military production around Little Rock. In 1928 work began on building what would become known as Park Boulevard which connected Park Avenue and Main Street in downtown Sherwood; construction continued until 1932 when parkway construction began adjacent to Main Street creating an unparallelled shopping environment within easy walking distance for residents and visitors alike. During World War II much effort was expended towards creating artificial lakes or "docks" on several small hills near downtown Sherwood for storage and use by war production plants; these were abandoned after the war when metal prices collapsed following America's entry into World War II without any corresponding increase in demand for naval vessels or other naval supplies needed by allied nations struggling financially during that time period.}
