In 1906, it closed its doors after a fire destroyed most of the manufacturing plant including over 1,000 workers who had built it over sixty years ago.
Sherwood is a small town in Arkansas, located about 30 miles northeast of Little Rock. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is within the Little Rock–Jefferson County School District. The name "Sherwood" comes from the Cherokee word ქართუ (sherwan), meaning "forest." A post office was established in Sherwood in 1907, and remained in operation until it closed in 1973. Most of what we know about Sherwood comes from oral history and local history books that have been preserved by the citizens of the community since they were written down or published. One such book is "Sherwood: A History of an American Village" by Hosea Cardwell. This book tells the story of Sherwood since its founding as a small settlement on October 10, 1907 by settlers John Crouch and his wife Mary Alice Morehead Cardwell. From this initial group of six residents only two remain today- John Crouch and his wife Mary Alice Morehead Cardwell's son-in-law, Harold Howell III. In 1909, when school became available for students in Sherwood village center following construction of a new school district line northward from Fort Smith (the old depot), Mrs. Cardwell decided to open her home as a library for her children attending schools north of town on Highway 516A (now State Route 64). The first branch opened on December 15th with 9 books including one full set of Webster’s Dictionary which Mrs. Cardwell had brought over from Arkansas City where she had previously worked as librarian for the First Baptist Church there before moving to Sherwood Valley in 1906 to become manager/librarian at Evergreen Methodist Episcopal Church; after serving as assistant pastor at First Baptist Church South from 1928-1929 before becoming Pastor emeritus therefrom 1951 until her death on July 4th, 1984; after which time it became “The Honorable Mrs. Harold Howell III LIBRARY” Branch No 2 under management of Mrs Lois Ruddick who served until her retirement effective September 1st, 2008 Branch No 3 hereafter). As mentioned earlier some items donated by Mrs Crouch's family are still kept current including an early model Ford Model T fastback owned by Mr &Mrs George Howlett and still drove around town during prohibition days when all liquor could be bought right up behind their house; also an early Peerless radio built circa 1935 still operates out front sharing audible music programming with neighboring homes thru hubcap antennas prewired into their rooflines (& many other features not described herein because they would incriminate themselves)

It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Port Girardeau Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sherwood was founded in 1881 by John H. Forbes and his wife Emeline Aitken Forbes. The community name comes from the word "shird" which means "a clearing or space used for grazing animals." In 1911, Sherwood had a post office, but it closed in 1912. In 1918, the first school in town opened with nine students. In 1925, a second school was built and served until 1951; it was replaced by an adult education center that still operates today. From 1926 to 1945, Sherwood had a Methodist church; that building is now used as a senior citizen center. The economy of Sherwood has traditionally been based on agriculture and ranching; however, recent years have seen some growth in service industries such as health care and retail businesses. The population of Sherwood peaked at 2,065 in 2000 and has since declined slightly to 1,998 inhabitants as of 2010
Sherwood was a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States until the late 20th century. It is now a ghost town. The first white settler in Sherwood was George Waddell. He and his family moved from Illinois to the area in 1867. The population of Sherwood at its peak was just over 100 people. However, by 1870, the population had decreased to just six people due to the Panic of 1873. By 1881, only one person lived in Sherwood; John Tilton. In 1903, barbering shop owner James Jarrell built a log cabin on what is now known as Main Street for himself and his three sons; Donnell (1902-2007), Harry (1920-2008) and Robbie (1924-2009). In 1907, Jarrell married Hilda Easley and they started living in their new home together. They were divorced in 1961 but continued to live there together until Hilda's death in 1990. In 1957, Sheriff Lamar Cook bought the house from Jarrell's son Robbie for $5 USD In 1960s, when it became more common for people to move away from small towns during the Great Depression, many residents of Sherwood left for unknown reasons including fear of being evicted or jailed if they stayed put. Just one year later however, on October 1st 1960 local resident Dwayne Whitehead moved into one of Jarrell's buildings after being displaced from his home by hunters who encroached on his property without asking permission First time rancher Whitehead barnstormed through Pulaski County looking for land he could purchase indicated that he might have something special found where he was going since no one had ever shown interest before him either prospector or farmer Jimmie Dickinson did some digging also located 3 headwaters of Arkansas River right near present day town limits then announced find while out walking platted townsite name change to "Sherwood"
