It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Abernathy, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sherwood was founded in 1874 by Abram Sherwood and his wife Lillie. The first post office in the community was established in 1876. The name of the town came from a sawmill near where it now stands. A mill on the South Fork of the White River was destroyed by fire in 1902, but a new mill building and dam were built soon afterward. The town's economy has been based mostly on agriculture since its inception; however, some recent development has included manufacturing and light industrial activity. In addition to Sherwood High School (formerly known as "Arkansas High"), which serves students from grades 9-12, there are two other public schools: Mesquite Elementary School and White Sands Middle School. According to the 2010 US Census Bureau report*, Sherwood had a total population of 1,848 people living within its boundaries including 793 households and 537 families residing inside of ZIP code 72002*. This means that almost all residents live within one mile or less of their homes - with only three exceptions* - making it one of Arkansas' smallest towns by population size*.* *The exception is nearby Springdale which had a population growth rate above average for Pulaski County during this period**
