The first people to live in what is now Sherwood were the Hensons. They came from Kentucky in 1836 and homesteaded land on the banks of theArkansas River. In 1881, John Waddell built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. He and his wife Fannie died there in 1906 and are buried in Pinson Cemetery near downtown Sherwood. In 1907, J C Franks opened a general store at 5th and Broadway Streets in Sherwood. He continued to run the store until it closed in 1951. The building has been occupied by various businesses since then including an auto parts store, restaurant, and bait shop before being used as apartmentship housing for many years before being sold to a family who operated it as their farmstead until it was purchased by local rancher Lamar Aldridge Jr., Jr., in 1996 which restored it back to its original condition In 2002-2004, Sherwood had its own tornado outbreak with three tornadoes that touched down within two blocks of each other on Main Street just east of Franks' Store; one swept through residences on Park Avenue (now Courtyard Drive), damaging homes but no injuries were reported The Stroud Foundation donated money for reconstruction of Main Street between Park Avenue and Court House Road following these storms which included resurfacing of all street pavement, installation of storm drains/water systems and new driveways/arteries
