Sherwood, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,867 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Ellington, AR metropolitan area. The first settlers in Sherwood were white men who arrived in 1871 from Tennessee. They built a log cabin and named it "Pulaski." In 1876, they donated land to the town for development and erected a schoolhouse and church. The first post office was established in Sherwood on July 15, 1881. The community experienced some growth during the early 1900s as cotton farmers relocated to the area from other parts of Arkansas. By 1910, Sherwood had a blacksmith shop and two churches. During World War I, many residents served in the military; one of which was J P Stephenson who became Postmaster General of Arkansas after the war ended. In 1938, Sheriff John Crouch appointed 24-year-old Roy Epps as Town Marshal after he won an election against incumbent G H Smithwick Jr.. Epps held that position until his death in 1984; however, there has never been an elected sheriff since then. In 1998–2000Sherwood underwent a process known as " municipal restructuring" which changed many aspects of government including voting procedures and limits on number of terms for Mayor/Council members combined with creation of 4 new wards: Central Business District (CBD), North Side (NSW), East Side (ES), and West Side (WEST). This change resulted in increased citizen input into decisions about local governance and helped to create more democratic institutions within the town while also increasing economic opportunities for all residents through better job prospects available near schools and businesses adjacent to Sherwood Boulevard
The town of Sherwood, Arkansas was founded in 1887 by a group of gentlemen named J.W. and Fannie Woodruff. The town grew rapidly due to the opening of the new railway line from Fort Smith to Sherwood. By 1907, there were over 100 businesses in the town and it had a population of around 350 people. The townsite remained stable through the economic recession that hit Arkansas in the 1920s, but it did not rebound as robustly as other communities in the state during that time. In 1951,Sherwood became an incorporated city with a population of over 1,000 people.
