Seventy-four people were killed, including twelve sheriff’s deputies and two members of theArkansas State Police Force. In 1986, Congress passed Amendment 2 to the US Constitution which allowed for civilians to use pepper spray against law enforcement Officers if they feel their life was endangered or threatened. Searcy is a small town in eastern Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–West Monroe Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for John Searcy, a frontiersman and entrepreneur who set up a trading post here in 1819. As the community grew, Searcy started awarding its own naming contests to residents to come up with ideas for new names. One such contest led to the selection of "Searcy" as the name for the town in 1886. In 1907, when Searcy incorporated as an city, it changed its name again - this time to "Searcy" after Elijah Piney Woodruff Sr., its first mayor. The now-defunct Searcy Manufacturing Company operated from 1951 until 1984 and produced farm implements and other agricultural products; some of its products still remain on store shelves today. In 2000, Searcy had just over 2200 people living in it; by 2010 that number had grown to over 2500 residents. The economy has been diversified with many businesses active in textiles and manufacturing (most notably Midwestern Apparel), while also enjoying growth in government contracting and professional services (including law enforcement). Many of these businesses are located near downtown where they continue to thrive despite competition from larger shopping malls nearby

Outlying areas had populations ranging from about 100 to 400 residents according to2011 estimates from the USGS aerial survey data for that year only; however as of July 2016 this had increased to over 1,900 people living within a radius encompassing all but two blocks square mile centered on downtown Searcy The history of Searcy goes back over 160 years with many families moving into and around it during that time including: James Fenton who settled here in 1868 after being injured while serving with General Sherman’s army during the American Civil War; Captain George Waddell who built one of Arkansas first steamboats when he came downriver from Texas; David Ladd who bought his initial lots near what became downtown Searcy in 1886; John Allred Jr., father-in-law of Mrs . Sarah Goodloe Allred who donated land for an addition on her original home west side Main Street between Court Avenue and Cedar Street which became known as “Allred”s Center” later renamed “Searcy City Hall” following their donation to that name by Mayor Gentry Harriman in 1963; Archibald Smithson settled hereabouts following his purchaseof 640 acres east side Main Street between Court Avenue and Valley Road sometime after 1855 when he also moved his family onto some other property nearby including: Jesse Walker who homesteaded along what became southwestern corner Cemetery Road southeast thereof (later known as Park Drive) just east of current day Highway 9 northbound on what would become Park Drive northeast thereof about 1870 or so likewise Henry Burtons pioneer family whose farmstead now lies just northwest corner Federal Highway/US 66 intersection less than one mile southwest thereof across Hwy 6 from present day historic Black Hawk Arsenal Site aforesaid
