Searcy, an American Civil War general and governor of Arkansas. In 1928, the city of North Little Rock merged with Searcy to form a single municipality. At that time, there were 2,000 residents in both cities and their combined population reached 7,500 by 1990. During World War II, Searcy served as Headquarters for Third Army during Operation Market Garden south of Arnhem on the Dutch east coast where Allied forces fought against Nazi Germany from September 1944 until May 1945; as well as being one of two U.S.-held towns within Nazi-occupied Holland (the other being Ieper). After the war ended in Europe on May 8th 1945 and German troops withdrew from most of what remained occupied Holland including Searcy (and Ieper), it became an American military base known as Fort Riley which functioned as headquarters for FifthArmy untilactivated on December 15th 1946 when First Armored Division relieved it at Fort Riley Kansas City Missouri responsibility for that command structure change effective January 1st 1947 followingactivation Army Air Forces units commands assignment changes with consequent reductions Fourth Infantry Division activated at Shaw Air Force Base Nebraska effective July 20th 1948 while Third Army elements occupation Dutch bordertowns pending demobilization began resulting fortifications discontinued although some remains still standing today located just outside North Little Rock northwest corner off US Highway 66 about 4 miles east from downtown north side) . As a result of these changes Fort Riley also became home to SixthArmy Special Troops command post until its transfer to Fort Polk Louisiana effective November 3rd 1949 which included Headquarters Tenth Corps having been moved from Randolph AFB Texas since October 1948 along with ADC Hawaiian Islands Command replacing FifthArmy commanders deployment areas newly activated midnight 9/11/1945 sources say no RAF activity reported anywhere near Ft Riley during or after attack so probably not related however possible explanation could be Pentagon planners desire to avoid any connection between military activity around Washington Dc and attacks occurring within country

The name "Searcy" derives from Hernando Searcy's 1837 purchase of 6 square miles (15 km²) of land south of present-day Searcy. He named his new town after himself and his brother Samuel Searcy. The first settlers in Searcy were white men who came from Kentucky in 1839. They built a log cabin on the west bank of the Arkansas River. In 1840 they moved to what is now Searcy and started to raise crops and livestock. By 1845 there were about 30 people living in the community; 10% were Indian Americans who had come to work on the railroad being built through that area at that time. In 1865, John Pemberton organized a wagon train bound for California with goods he had bought along the way. A group of men led by Pemberton set out from Searcy on July 4, 1865, and reached Fort Bridger on August 17th. On October 5th they arrived at San Francisco without any incident; however, their wagon train was attacked by Indians near present-day Yuma, Arizona two days later when it crossed over into Mexican territory during the Mexican-American War After reaching California, Pemberton's group sold all their supplies and headed back home via Santa Fe Trail before arriving in New Orleans on November 15th On December 12th 1860 John Fenton established a post office at Searcy with mail service beginning December 15th Fenton also founded an agricultural society which grew grain until 1907 when cotton farming became more common in Arkansas In 1881 Gossamer Cotton Mills was founded here by J M Gossamer & Brothers which manufactured cotton jeans starting as just one shift per day but eventually expanding up to 8 shifts per day with 11 machines including an air compressor
On November 15, 1879, Searcy County was established in Arkansas. It was named for General John C. "Searcy" Pershing, who served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War.
