Searcy, Arkansas is a small town in the Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas. It was one of the few towns in the area when I moved to it in 1992. The population was 930 at the 2000 census. The name Searcy comes from Searcy County, Illinois, which was named for Colonel John Fenton Searcy (1786-1868), a United States cavalry officer and member of the Missouri Compromise who served as an Ambassador Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Mexico City from 1829 to 1830. In 1839, he founded what became Searcy County,Arkansas, with land grants from Ulysses S. Grant and other Westerners seeking to fill a gap in the frontier region between Missouri and Texas. Most of what is now Searcy was settled by Arkansans during Reconstruction following the American Civil War; many white people came here after being expelled or driven out of their homes by Union troops occupieing Arkansas. There were no black residents until after World War II when African Americans began moving into areas such as this during Jacksonian times when segregation had become more rigid than ever before. A post office called Searcy was established in 1877, and remained in operation until 1907. The first resident listed on the census rolls was Dora Atherton with her husband David Atherton in 1880; they were followed by Hoke Smith with his wife Lillie Mayfield Fenton in 1886; Anna Henderson with her husband George Henderson in 1890; John Meeks with his wife Jennie Gentry Meeks in 1895; James Crouch with his wife Emma Crouch Morse Tucker on November 1, 1897; Willis Waddell with his wife Jennie Waddell Hodge on November 3, 1897; Ella Warewith her husband Vernon Warewith on November 5, 1898; Addison Chaffin with his wife Eliza Cline Chaffin on October 15 1901 ; Amos Leary Jr., who arrived January 21 1902 ; all are listed as natives of Illinois All but Amos Leary Jr., who arrived January 21 1902 are still living today within walking distance of their original residences although some have moved away since then. Dora Atherton's son Donnell Earle Atherton became mayor of Searcy after she died there while serving as assistant attorney general for Little Rock County government under William Jett Wilkinson III (1909-1993). He also served two terms as county judge (1985-1991) before becoming First Deputy Attorney General for Human Resources Management under Janet Reno (2001-2005). In 1984 Donnell Earle Atherton married Bonnie Blackman Whitlock who later served two terms as First Lady of Arkansas before dying there too while giving birth to twins: Preston Earl Whitlock Atherton (born December 12th 1984) and Amelia Elizabeth Whitehair Tipton (born February 3rd 1986). Preston Earl Whitlock married Whitney Roberts Fountain who later served two terms as Governor of Arkansas before dying there too while giving birth to twins: Benjamin Harrison Fountain (born October 8th 1990) and Kay Harrison Fountain (born December 6th 1993).

Searcy, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,693 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The first settler in Searcy was A.G. Searcy, who arrived in 1881. Other early settlers were: John Hanks (1883), Wm Gentry (1885), Fenton McMillin (1887), and Geo Sesson (1889). In 1903, Jno Chappell bought the land that now makes up part of Searcy from Hanks and developed it into a city. By 1930, there were over 20 businesses in downtown Searcy with a population of over 100 people. In 1907 the first oil well was drilled in Searcy when Sidney Epps drilled #1 for Pembroke Oil & Gas Company and named it 'Sidney Epps Well'. The discovery led to an increase in business for both men as they became involved with many companies drilling oil wells around this time including: Gulf Oil Corporation, Andrews Oil Company and others. One highlight during these years for Searcy was when on July 12th 1907 an electrified streetcar ran through downtown without any problems due to new wiring installed by city officials as part of improving transportation conditions for all citizens during World War I; this event is still remembered today as the day before Electric Streetcar Day! On October 15th 1909 Mayor Lewis Hoffman announced plans to build a high school which would serve the townspeople until their own High School could be built nearer to the center of town; this project eventually became known as Harvester High School which opened its doors on November 1st 1912! During World War II much activity took place within and outside of Searcy because so many people had ties to our country through military service or being employed overseas; some notable events include: on December 8th 1942 residents organized a general strike against local WWII munitions production plants after Aflac Airlines refused to play ball with local Paper Mill workers- resulting in several police cars being called out to escort strikers from Local 4235! On January 7th 1945 American Forces bombed three German Airfields located just east of Quitman duringOperation Market Garden- causing extensive damage and loss of life amongst civilians- one particular airfield which remains unnamed today! In commemoration of these horrendous events numerous streets throughout town have been renamed after fallen Americans or those who gave their lives fighting alongside our troops abroad- such as Electric Avenue/Ulysses S Grant Boulevard/American Revolution Road etc….Today however mostofthe names are familiar thanks to popular tourist attractions such as Harvester Museum & Park located adjacent to Downtown & Fort Union Battlefield park located close by
