Searcy, Arkansas is a small town located in Searcy County, Arkansas. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Jacksonville, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Searcy were French traders who explored the area in 1670. The early settlers were men from Illinois and Kentucky. In 1821, an expedition led by Captain Johnathan Hurd traveled through the area and named it for General David Searcy who had represented Kentucky in the United States Congress during that year. General James K. Polk also visited Searcy in 1821 while he was on his way to war with Mexico. In 1828, George Rector settled here and built a cabin called "Rector's Cabin". This became one of the first businesses in Searcy County. A store was started by Mr. Rector and his brother-in-law Prentice Moultrie in 1830 and continued until 1868 when it closed because of lack of customers or competition from other stores. A post office was established here in 1834; it operated until 1907 when it was moved to Little Rock (then known as Arkadelphia). In 1840, Zebulon Pike discovered gold near Searcy; this encouraged settlement around this location but no significant development took place until after 1865 when John Crain opened a general store which soon became successful enough to be extended into what is now called “Crain’s Corner” downtown today where several buildings still stand including the original bank building which houses both branches of ARKANSAS BANK & CO., INC.. The growth of Searcy occurred primarily due to its strategic location midway between two important railroads –the Memphis and Nashville Railroad (now Union Pacific) line northwest of town limits north of Fort Smith (laterLittle Rock) on the east side of White River –and its convenient access to water supplies necessary for agriculture and industry along both banks of White River west of town limits southward towards Fort Smith (later Jonesboro). "Arkansas Gazette" November 25th 1870: Sixty acres patented for $2 per acre lot within 5 years land grantee will receive $150 per year plus interest." Upon receiving news thatsummary patentees would only receive $10 per acre each following five years under new legislation passed by congress building up farmlands amounted mostly around Arkadelphia tho not given much thought since most original patents were already claimed b4 1865...It should be noted however that many old tracts still remain unclaimed undisturbed despite claims made over many decades." It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by David Searcy on October 12, 1876. At that time it consisted of just a handful of tents and a few logs buildings. A post office was established in Searcy on November 11, 1876, and mail arrived from Illinois and Missouri every day until 1880 when the railroad came through town. The first store in Searcy opened in December 1877. By 1886 there were five stores and three restaurants in the town; alloperated by citizens or businesses close to home who could provide goods and services to residents. In 1907 local businessman Julius Wimer donated land for a local high school which became Searcy High School; today the building still stands as one of the most notable landmarks intown. In 1917 Searcy's first hospital opened with twenty beds; it now houses the Arkadelphia Health Center. David Searcy passed away on September 10th, 1918 at age 78 years old after serving his community for many years as an educator, millwright and farmer – he was also known for his philanthropy including donating money to build schools and hospitals aroundArkansas . For many years following David's death word got out about how much good he had done not just within his own community but throughout that area as well – so much so that when he left behind an estate valued at $1 million dollars (USD), searchers found it difficult to come up with any specific history or information about him specifically before finally locating what may be one of only two such estates remaining statewide... modern research has shown that David Searcy's legacy can be seen throughout rural Pulaski County - even today some residents refer to themselves simply as "Searcyites" because they have adopted some aspect of his lifestyle or life-style either directly or indirectly..
In 1831, Searcy became the first Arkansas town to be organized. The town was named after General James Fenton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War. In 1868, Searcy became a city.
