Searcy, Arkansas is located in the Ozark Mountains of southern Missouri. In 1881, Walter P. Farnsworth and his brother-in-law John S. Brown patented a device that allowed them to fire Winchester rounds without having to reload. The brothers named their new company Winchester Repeating Arms Company, Inc., and began manufacturing firearms in Searcy. It wasn't until 1903 that they produced their first rifle, the Model 1886 Springfield Rifle. The company continued production of firearms throughout World War I and into the 1920s; however, production was halted during the Great Depression because of lack of funding.
