Rogers, Arkansas is a town of around 9,000 residents located in Pulaski County on the eastern edge of the Ozarks. The town was founded in 1874 by cattlemen who came from Texas to homestead in what is now Rogers. Today, Rogers is a small, Midwestern farming town with a population of around 100. The first guns ever made in Rogers were pistols. In 1876, John Crouch purchased land east of town and began producing gun cases from his foundry. The first cases were made out of parts salvaged from old artillery pieces that had been scrapped during the Civil War. By 1880, John Crouch had two shops manufacturing pistol cases and shotguns. His company became known as The Arsenal Company and continues to make firearms today under the name Armory Supply Company. In 1903, local farmer William Southerland built a home on what is now Main Street in Rogers and used it as his business office for his rifle dealership called Winchester & Sons Rifle Shop. This establishment became one of the most important gun dealerships in Arkansas because it sold both rifles and shotguns to farmers throughout the state. Winchester & Sons continued to operate until 1978 when it merged with another major rifle dealership, Browning Arms Corporation (BA). At BA’s merger into Colt Inc., Winchester & Sons Pipegun Store also merged into Colt’s pipegun division which eventually became part of Ruger Firearms Incorporated (Ruger) when that company was formed in 1989 . Today, Ruger still manufactures handguns at their plant adjacent to Main Street in Rogers but much more emphasis is placed on shotgun production which has seen a resurgence due to legislative changes favorable towards such product development over the last several years
