Rogers, Arkansas is located in the Ozark Mountains of central Arkansas. The town was founded in 1881 by a group of farmers led by John Rogers. It became a municipality in 1907 and a city in 1959. Rogers was named after General Andrew Johnson, who served as President of the United States from 1868 to 1874 and as Vice President from 1875 to 1880. The town was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Rogersville in 1851. They were followed by African Americans soon after, and the town developed primarily through slave trade until abolition came about two years later. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House after his army was defeated at Gettysburg during the American Civil War. As Reconstruction began, many black people moved into Rogersville and other areas of central Arkansas because southern states had not yet given them full rights as citizens. By 1870, most blacks had been sent away or had left for other parts of the country. John Jernigan started farming around 1800 near present-day Rogersville with help from his wife Anna Joneson and her husband David Humphreys Sr.. The first permanent settler on what is nowRogersville Road built their home there around 1830-31 when they acquired 200 acres of land grants from James Bowie (son of Colonel James Bowie). In 1861 John Jernigan married Rebecca Hawkins (daughterof Solomon Hawkins) and commenced operationsraising hogs on their farmstead which still stands today across from Highway 9 east ofRogersville.' Hogs were an important partof local subsistence life during this time period since raw pork could be sold for $1-$2 per pound at local stores
