The community began as a small farmstead called "Rogers" on the banks of the Arkansas River. A post office was established in 1868, and by 1870 the community had grown to around 200 residents. In 1876, Rogers was named after General James E. Rogers who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Kansas. In 1907, Rogers became an incorporated town under the name "Rogers". It grew rapidly during World War I due to its proximity to military bases and its role as an airfield for United States Army Air Forces operations in World War II. The town's population peaked at over 3,000 people in 1940 but declined thereafter due to various factors including World War II service members leaving for other wars, increased competition from other towns within Stephens County, and changes in local agricultural practices that caused larger farms to outcompete smaller ones. However, by 1973 Rogers had regained some of its lost ground thanks to suburban development and job growth across Stephens County. At that point it again reached its peak population with 4,843 residents according to the 2000 census; however this number has since begun to decline (in 2016 it reported 3,952 residents).
