This led to the development of new pistol caliber designs which had increased power but reduced vulnerability to gunfire. Today’s handguns use a variety of handgun calibers which allow them to efficiently engage targets at close range without becoming vulnerable (e.g., 9mm NATO). Rifles were first developed using smoothbore guns that fired balls instead of rounds like pistols do today. The power of rifle cannons was initially depended on muzzle velocity rather than projectile size which limited their effectiveness in small-scale fights or against troops who could move quickly around battlefields. Muzzle velocity gradually became more important as artillery pieces became more advanced and destructive munitions were developed such as shellfire that could destroy large areas with single shots or barrages (i.e., machine gun fire). With increasing firepower came an increase in accuracy potential meaning snipers could now kill even high-value targets with relative ease while troopsfights transitioned into open warfare where artillery bombardments were no longer possible (e.g., World War II). Consequently, rifle cartridges became increasingly standardized so soldiers would be able to shoot accurately at targets regardless of distance or terrain; this led eventually to rifles being fielded by all armies during wars throughout history
