In 1906, John Houlahan began manufacturing ammunition for sale in Rogers. His products were very successful, and he continued making ammo until his death in 1982. At his death, he had a net worth of $2 million dollars! During the early 1900’s there were many companies that manufactured ammunition inRogers. Some of these companies include Winchester Ammunition Company (1907-1960), American Ammunition (1899-1968), Armoury Ammunition Company (1895-1976), Browning Arms Manufacturing Company (1901-1983), Remington Arms Company (1920-1996) and Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation (1906-.). Rogers is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 537 at the 2010 census. Rogers is named for General Andrew Rogers, who fought in the Mexican-American War and led an unsuccessful effort to capture Mexico City. The first residents of Rogers were families of English settlers that moved from Georgia in 1853. In 1870, James Akeley opened a store on the east side of town. About this time, a post office was established and named after General Rogers. A railroad station was also built inRogers and served as an important stop on the Memphis and Arkansas Railway (M&AR). The community grew rapidly during the early 1900s thanks to its location near two railway tracks and easy access to water supplies. By 1910, there were twenty homes in Rogers with a total population of ninety-four people. During World War I, many American soldiers served in France as part of the French Expeditionary Force (EEF). Among these soldiers was Major John Latham Rogers Jr., who joined forces with British troops at Beaumont Farms outside of Rogers on July 17, 1915. After being honorably discharged from military service in 1918, Major Rogers rebuilt his home here and started what would become one of Arkansas' largest agricultural businesses - Latham Bros., Incorporated - which operated until 1957. During its heyday, Latham Bros.' produce included corn (maize), cotton (xxx), potatoes (xxx), apples (xxxi), oranges (xxiii), sweet potatoes (xxxii) and more than 1 million square feet of retail space across three floors at 122 E Main Street; it was said that “ Rogers had everything” including schools for children as well as stores for adults/machines/farm equipment etc... In 1957 however, when fire destroyed much of downtown Pulaski County due to defective building codes enacted by local officials prior to that time period (& still extant today!), major alterations were made to Latham Bros.' property by then president Emeritus John Witherspoon & son emeritus Don Witherspoon which resulted in cessation or reduction(?)of operations at both locations until finally closure sixteen years later! It should be noted that while much has changed since those earlier days...the name "Latham Bros." still crops up occasionally among locals throughout rural Pulaski County circa late fall thru early winter when offerings are available pursuant to ' nostalgic crawfish fever!'
