Pine Bluff, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General James Pine who fought in the American Civil War. The first settlers to what is now Pine Bluff were white men from Kentucky and Tennessee who arrived in 1836. They built a cabin on the present site of the town. A post office was established in 1839, and by 1845, there were 10 residents living in the community. By 1860, there were 50 residents living in what is now Pine Bluff. In 1865, General James Pine led an army against Confederate forces near Fort Smith and Battle Mountain Railroad Bridge which destroyed that bridge; this event helped spur development around that area including the founding of towns such as Fayetteville and Hot Springs. In 1890s-1910s, homespun mills began to be developed around the intersection of U.S Route 44 (now Interstate 45) and State Highway 9 (now State Road 358). These mills produced materials for items such as clothing, shoes, hats and other household goods until they closed down during World War II due to technological advances; however their remnants can still be seen today around town square. In 1926-1927 construction began on what would become known as "The Cotton Belt" Project which aimed to improve transportation infrastructure connecting eastern Arkansas with cotton plantations in Mississippi and Alabama; this project increased trade between these areas and helped create jobs for locals throughout its duration. In 1951-1953 construction began on Interstate 55 which connected Pine Bluff with Little Rock through I-40; this project increased traffic along US 44/SR 9 while helping support economic growth within both cities over time. The town rapidly grew and soon became an important crossroads on the road between Independence and Fort Smith. In 1871, pine trees were firstlogged in Pine Bluff and began to be processed into lumber. By 1900, the town had become one of the largest in Arkansas.
