In the early 1800s, a man by the name of George Ordnance named his company, Ordnance Company No. 1, after himself and his first purchase from Nicholas-Jacques Cartier in 1793. The first people to settle in Pine Bluff were French Canadian missionaries who arrived in 1836 and built a log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Pine Bluff. A post office was established in 1837, and by 1840 there were two stores and four settlers living in town. In 1881, when Arkansas became a state, Pine Bluff was incorporated as a city. The city's growth continued until the early 1970s when it began to decline because of heavy industry relocation outside the city limits. In 1976, however, Pine Bluff became an anchor member of the Arkansas River Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area which has seen rapid growth since then. Today, PineBluffs economy depends largely on its status as an agricultural center with many small-scale businesses based around agriculture or related industries such as lumbering and crop production; although tourism remains a significant component of the local economy. Since 2000 there has been progress being made towards revitalization efforts within town – starting with comprehensive planning that focused on restoring historic buildings and facilities; followed by implementation of new urban design principles that focus on creating more pedestrian-friendly streetscapes for townspeople to enjoy; and finally culminating with passage of Town Plan Review Amendments Act (TPRA) in 2013 which gave locals more control over their municipal government’s operations
Pine Bluff was founded by a group of farmers in 1881. The town grew rapidly and soon became the center of Arkansas' cotton industry. In 1915, Pine Bluff became the first city in Arkansas to be granted city status.
