The original church built there (now known as First Baptist) was dedicated on November 12, 1882. The present church stands there today and serves as the town's only facility of worship. A new school building was dedicated on December 5th of that year which served as the town's primary educational institution until 1955 when a new high school building replaced it; this building still serves as the towns' only educational facility today though its use has been converted into apartments]. In 1955 a new community hall also replaced both these buildings.] Paragouds steady growth can be credited with two factors: its location within easy driving distance of Bentonville (the county seat) as well as an increase in highway development across Pulaski County which made it easier for people to get to work or groceries without having to leave their homesbase] . Additionally, Des Moines-based Mayco Oil Company laid off many workers during World War II due to military production shortages so that those who stayed were able to build paragon shops along Highway 9 – now called Main Street – which helped keep businesses open during wartime shortages] In 1955 when all but three businesses had closed due to market conditions following enactment of Interstate 55 construction through Pulaski County], Mayco Oil Company moved their operations out of town altogether and utilized some abandoned land just east of downtown renamed Shops Park [] . Today part of Main Street between Elmwood Avenue and South Central Boulevard remains vacant while other parts have been remodeled into apartments
