The community was founded on December 15, 1886 by John and Mary (née Hennessey) Paragould. It originally stood just south of the current town line between Pulaski County and Hot Springs County. In 1915, the Paragould post office moved to its present location within town limits. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,394 people, 553 households, and 389 families residing in the town. The population density was 1010 per square mile (366/km²). Paragould is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 449 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Fayetteville–Bentonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Paragould was Thomas Clements who built a log cabin on what is now state Route 7 in 1836. The first post office in Paragould was established in 1837, and the town Name changed to "Pulaski" on July 1, 1838, due to high water levels from the nearby White River. In 1854, Paragould had a school and three churches which served the community until 1955 when all three churches were closed down because of budget cuts by then Superintendent of Education John B Robb. The last church service took place on December 15th that year at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend J H Downing officiating. A new school opened up in 1956 named for Mrs P F Hammonds which Standed until it closed down again cuz of budget cuttings by then Superintendent Robb again cuz we as black people couldn't afford to buy property like white people can so we just sat around and looked sad cause there wasn't nothing else to do except watch TV all day long
In 1821, John G. Paragould and his brother James moved to what is now Paragould, Arkansas from their birthplace in central Illinois. In 1826, the brothers erected a log cabin on the present site of the town. The following year, they married Anna Belle Hinton. John operated a small general store in Paragould for many years before selling it in 1865 to A.W. Phelps. Phelps built the first school building in Paragoud in 1868 and later donated land for a town square which remains today as the downtown core of Paragould. In 1893, Harry Waddell founded the Arkansas Southern Railway near Paragould and developed nearby Storeyville into an important business center during the early 20th century.
