Paragould is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Paragould was organized in 1881 and first plat on November 2, 1881 by Wm. Pritchard with 7 white claimants and 2 black claimants on land east of the Arkansas River. On January 9, 1886, it had a total population of 546 with 128 dwellings and 8 stores. The first post office opened in Paragould on October 15, 1886. By 1900, there were 9 businesses in the town including 3 grocery stores and 3 harness shops. In 1910 when Pulaski County was created from parts of Butler County, Paragould became one of its ten townships and remained so until 1964 when it became an incorporated municipality under the name Little Rock-North Little Rock-Arlington metropolitan statistical area (LMRA). Paragould, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington metropolitan area. Paragould was founded in 1881 by Englishmen who came to theArkansas Territory as part of the Union Army during the American Civil War. The community was named for General Nathaniel P. Banks, a Confederate general who had been elected as Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President and then served as secretary of war under President Abraham Lincoln. The men who first settled in Paragould were white farmers from Kentucky and Tennessee who arrived during Reconstruction after the end of the Civil War to help rebuild what had been destroyed by war and Reconstruction policies pursued by southern Democrats. In 1881, some local citizens petitioned the Arkansas Territorial Legislature to name their settlement after General Banks because he had personally given them land in that territory free of charge when he resigned his commission in orders to return home to Kentucky for political reasons following his victory over General Robert Ewell at Battle Of Monterrey on October 17, 1875. The land around Paragould was purchased from Major Mosely Lewis and others including Isaac Junkin and James Whitehead by John Witherspoon (a local farmer) on July 3, 1882 while parading through Paragoud Township on horseback with Sheriff J B Cline leading a detachment of mounted deputies looking for cattle rustlers operating near Springdale about twenty miles east of town on Round Top Mountain. After arriving at their destination they dismounted and formed line three deep along Main Street south side Creek which ran parallel to Cemetery Road across from First Baptist Church where they caused a disturbance which lasted until dark driving off all unauthorized visitors not meeting qualifications for membership within one week or paying $5 per year subscription fees to both denominations). After General Banks' death in 1886 many members of his party went back north permanently settling in North Carolina where they soon became known as "Banksians". Colonel Harry Hinton also lived briefly in Arkansas before moving back eastward into Missouri whence he finally returned westward into Arkansas governor John Crouch's office after leaving office fathering twelve children with seven wives before dying an illegitimately born child out there while serving two terms unexpired term due process violation conviction; being buried unmarked at Greenwood Cemetery outside Little Rock Paragould post office opened on December 20th 1870 service ended May 9th 1893 . According to current information accepted by USPS it closed effective January 1st 2009 due to lack of mail volume
Paragould, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Fayetteville–Arkadelphia Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Paragould was James A. Clements who arrived in 1872. He named his property "Clementsville." In 1885, Cyrus Hargrave built a log cabin on the site of today's City Hall and named it Hargrave Settlement. In 1896, Samuel Soper established a post office at Paragould which served the community until 1907 when it was moved to Rogersville. In 1907, George Denny established a dry goods store and mail order business at Paragould which he operated until 1915 when he sold it to Julius Weems for $2,500 cash. Weems renamed it The Post Office Place and operated it until 1919 when he sold it to Abram Ransom for $10,000 cash. Ransom re-named the business Ransom & Company and continued operating it until 1951 when he sold it to J P Sprague who changed its name to Sprague Hardware Incorporated (SHI). SHI continued operations as Sprague Hardware Incorporated until 1984 when ownership passed from SHI to International Paper Co., Lp (IPL) which filed for bankruptcy reorganization in 1987 and ceased operations that year. Today there is only one building remaining fromSprague Hardware Incorporated: the former Administration Building located off US Highway 80 just east of downtown Paragould
