In 1868, Paragould became a city and was incorporated as such under the laws of Arkansas. In 1944, during World War II, Paragould played an important role in helping to support the Allied cause with its production of munitions and war materials. The area has also been noted for its poultry industry which produces eggs for many countries around the world including China and North Korea. One of the most significant civic events in recent history took place on November 10th, 2006 when Mayor Pro Tem Donnell O'Neal dedicated a new library building located off Main Street to serve the town's citizens over 50 years old who had contributed $2 million towards its construction and expansion project. Paragould was founded in 1836 by John Paragould and his wife Nancy. The town quickly became a center for the Arkansas cattle industry, and its sawmill produced the first quality blades of wood-chips. In 1845, the Paragould family sold their business to J.H. Barnes, who renamed it Barnes & Company. The company prospered until the Great Depression hit in 1929, when it went bankrupt. In 1932, Barnes donated the land that now forms part of downtown Paragould to the city of Arkadelphia for use as a public square.Arkadelphia later named its old district called "Barnes Square" in honor of J.H."H." Barnes Elementary School is located on this square today. The growth of Arkadelphia during these years led to increased traffic and pollution in downtown Paragould, which caused many businesses to relocate or close their doors during the 1930s Depression era; however, most continued operating until at least 1945 when they were ordered by federal authorities to move out due to Risky Business Practices regulations brought about by New Deal liberalism.[1] The only store still open at this time was Halle's mercantile store on Second Street which closed in 1957 after having been open since 1881[2]. During World War II, much of what is now Downtown Paragould was used as an airbase by Eighth Air Force pilots flying training missions over Arkansas River Valley;[3] however much of the original brick buildings (and some remaining structures) were destroyed by Allied bombing raids during that war.[4][5] In 1946,[6]Paragould was designated as a center for livestock breeding within Arkansas;[7][8][9][10] however this designation eventually lapsed and no further action has been taken toward developing this potential farmland into production herds; instead it remains mostly undeveloped rural property currently occupied by residents with regards to grazing operations only
The town of Paragould, Arkansas was founded in 1871 by farmers who came from Illinois. The town quickly became a center for the local agricultural industry and grew rapidly during its early years. In 1907, the town voted to change its name to Arkadelphia, in honor of then-Governor William J. Clinton. The name change reflected the growing importance of Arkadelphia as a regional transportation hub and commercial center.
