In 1860, Paragould had a population of 350 people; by 1910 it had declined to 100 people. Most residents were farmers with some retail trade operations.
Paragould was founded in 1836 by Major General Nathaniel Lyon. The town was named for Major General Parke Gould, an American Revolutionary War veteran and a friend of Lyon. The first store in Paragould opened in 1836. In 1840, the first post office was established in Paragould. The population of Paragould grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, reaching over 1,500 residents by 1860. During the 1870s and 1880s, the town developed into a small agricultural center with modest manufacturing capabilities. In 1892, Paragould became part of the Arkansas Territory and was renamed Ellerbeville after local landowner James Ellerbe. The town's population reached 2,000 residents by 1902. By 1907, however, increased growth had caused problems with infrastructure as well as limited resources; accordingly,Paragoudely become an incorporated city on July 1st of that year under charter number 8674-A. In 1908–09 a major fire destroyed most of downtown Paragould; however some buildings were rebuilt using local lumber and stone to keep the community going while repairs were made. In 1912 a new high school building was completed; this helped to revive downtown business activity which had declined since the early days of the city's existence. The city continued to grow through World War I until it reached its peak population of about 30,000 people in 1940 before decline began again due to increasing suburbanization and other social changes throughout Arkansas during that decade. Population estimates for 1990 ranged from 20 to 25 thousand people depending on source (Ulysses S Grant Birthplace Museum).
