It became a post office in 1886 and an incorporated municipality in 1907. The name is derived from nearby Paugord Lakeshore. Paragould has no schools but it contains a library and several churches which provide educational opportunities for the local populace. A variety of enterprises are located here including two churches that offer agricultural training; one offers woodworking classes; another provides carpentry services; and still others offer plumbing and home repairs/maintenance services along with sales of groceries and other items local farmers may need to sell to retailers. The main shopping center serving Paragould consists of four anchors: Walmart, Sears, JCPenney, and Kmart among others as well as smaller stores including Weis Markets & Supermarkets as well as several convenience stores within walking distance. Interstate 240 borders the town limits on its southern edge while Ulysses S Grant Boulevard runs parallel to it on its eastern edge providing access to both rural areas east of the city limit and downtown Paragould itself

Paragould is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for John P. Harmon, an early settler who platted the area in 1881. The post office was established in 1885 and served until 1907. The first store was built in 1902 and sold groceries to settlers living around the county seat of North Little Rock. In 1906, Paragould incorporated as a village and had its own school and fire department. In 1938, it merged with neighboring North Little Rock to form one large municipality called Paragould-North LittleRock City Councilmen Ballinger proposed that the name be changed to Arkansas City because of its location within the state boundaries but no action was taken on his recommendation. In 1951, both towns were annexed by Conway while still maintaining their separate governments; however, they became one municipality under the new name when Conway incorporation resulted in all residents being given city status regardless of residency or municipal affiliation outside of Conway proper
In 1836, Paragould was founded by the Paragould community of settlers. The town originally consisted of three settlements: a small farm on the riverbank, an adobe courthouse and jail, and a few log cabins. In 1851, the first post office was established in Paragould. By 1860, there were twenty-four residents in Paragould. In 1865, the first school was opened in Paragoud
