The arsenal produced cannons, rifles, pistols, artillery pieces, and other firearms for use in the American Civil War and World War I. In 1967 it was closed down because of budget cuts to state government programs.
Paragould is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Paragould" may be derived from the Choctaw word "paga", meaning "place where game is hunted." The town was founded in 1881 by settlers from Missouri who crossed the Arkansas River to near present-day Paragould. The first post office in Paragould was established in 1882 and named for Capt. Samuel Pakey, a member of the United States Army who fought against Mexican forces during the American Revolution. In 1896, when Pulaski County became organized, Paragould became its Seat and remained so until 1907 when it became a part of North Little Rock. In 1906, Paragouds built their first school which would remain their primary educational institution until 1978 when they moved it to nearby Conwayville and opened their new building there. The old school still stands today as an historical landmark within the town limits. A new high school was built on land donated by John Witherspoon in 1928 and now serves as one of the largest high schools in Arkansas with over 1,500 students enrolled grades 11-12. In 1984, Parkland Baptist Church (now First Baptist) purchased land adjacent to their current facility which served as home for many years before being replaced by a new gymnasium/community center that currently houses Ark Encounter affiliate Bible college graduation ceremonies and other events throughout the year as well as storage for church supplies and equipment during off hours).
