The area now known as Paragould was first settled by German immigrants in 1847. A post office called "Parrington" was established in 1851, and later changed to "Paragould". The first store in the town was built on Main Street in 1853. In 1876, the town purchased land from John Hennessey for $2 per acre. Paragould rapidly grew during the early 20th century due to its natural resources and agricultural production. In 1923, Paragould incorporated as a city; it remained an unincorporated community until 1978 when it became a part of the new Little Rock–Jefferson City Combined Statistical Area (CSA). In 2003, Little Rock eliminated its own municipal government and merged with Jefferson City to form one municipality; Paragould remains within that municipality today. The parched lands around what is now Paragoud were used for cattle grazing until about 1870 when settlers began to plant cotton farming hereabouts. Cotton plantations operated until 1930when they were replaced by sugar beets groves; however continued ranching continues adjacent to I-30 through present day farmlands east of downtownLittle Rock

In 1923, Interstate 30 was routed through Paragould; this made it an important trade center for truck drivers transporting goods between Arkadelphia and Little Rock. A new high school opened in 1984; that year, also saw the opening of a small shopping mall named after businessman/activist Bill Cosby which developed into an important commercial center for the town over time. In recent years,Paragould has seen some growth with development of new businesses such as a professional wrestling matches stemming from nearby Fayetteville's lack of local wrestling talent (the lack being remedied by moving RAW away from Fayetteville),and art galleries and music venues popping up all around town givingParagould more than just retail space these days but something special too!
